The Wrong-Address Mistake That Loses USDT in "Cheap Energy" Schemes

Tronergy · September 2026 · 4 min

Telegram channels around TRON are full of mailings like "0.01 TRX = 131K energy, zero fees!" with an address to send TRX to. The price is hundreds of times below cost, and it is not charity. Here is what those desks actually earn on.

How the money is lost

There is no hack — it is mundane. The scheme relies on you making two manual transfers in a row:

  1. You send 0.01–2 TRX to the energy wallet for the "rental".
  2. A minute later you make your main USDT transfer — and by mistake send it to the same address you just paid for energy.

Your USDT goes to the energy wallet. The blockchain is irreversible, and the "support" from the mailing goes silent at best. This is exactly what these schemes make money on.

Stage two: the "refund support"

The same mailings promise "wrong transfer? we refund — contact support". That is the second stage of the funnel: under the pretext of "wallet verification for the refund" you are asked to sign an approval or a multisig — after which the wallet is drained entirely. A telltale sign: deposit addresses in these mailings rotate regularly, because old ones get flagged by AML services.

Red flags of scam energy

— price several times below market (0.01 TRX when the real cost is dozens of times higher);
— you are asked to manually send TRX to an address;
— "wrong transfers refunded" via "support";
— requests to sign approve/multisig to "verify your wallet".

Transferring without that risk point

In Tronergy rental addresses do not exist: energy arrives as a DApp transaction at the tap of a button — you never transfer anything manually, so there is no energy address to mix up with your recipient. Non-custodial, no approvals or multisig ever requested. This protection costs you one slot — just under 1 TRX. A small price for not losing your money.
